3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is an advanced manufacturing technology that constructs three-dimensional objects by layering materials based on digital model files. Since its inception in the 1980s, 3D printing has evolved from a rapid prototyping tool to a key technology encompassing diverse fields such as medicine, aerospace, automotive, and construction, driving the manufacturing industry towards intelligent and personalized manufacturing.

The core principle of 3D printing is to generate a three-dimensional model using computer-aided design (CAD) software, then slice it into hundreds to thousands of two-dimensional cross-sectional data layers, guiding the printing machine to deposit material layer by layer. Common printing technologies include fused deposition modeling (FDM), stereolithography (SLA), and selective laser sintering (SLS), each suited to different materials (such as plastics, metals, and ceramics) and precision requirements. For example, FDM uses high-temperature melting of thermoplastics and extrusion layer by layer, making it suitable for low-cost prototyping; while SLA uses ultraviolet lasers to solidify liquid resin, enabling the creation of micron-level precision parts.

3D printing offers significant advantages: First, it offers a high℃of customization, enabling the production of complex geometries without molds, meeting the demands of medical implants and personalized consumer goods. Second, it boasts high material efficiency. Traditional subtractive manufacturing often generates significant waste, while additive manufacturing uses only the necessary material. Third, it shortens production cycles, making it particularly suitable for R&D scenarios involving small batches and rapid iterations.

However, 3D printing still faces challenges, such as slow printing speeds and the need to optimize the mechanical properties of large metal parts. With breakthroughs in technologies such as multi-material printing and 4D printing (time-varying materials), 3D printing will further integrate artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, becoming a key pillar of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and reshaping the global manufacturing landscape.
